Preventing Falls: Simple Steps to Stay Safe and Independent

As we age, maintaining independence and safety at home becomes more important than ever. One of the biggest risks to that independence? Falls.

In fact, 1 in 4 adults over the age of 65 experiences a fall each year, and many of these falls happen right at home. The good news is that most falls are preventable with a few simple changes.

At Olive Health, we’re committed to helping you stay safe, healthy, and confident in your daily life.

Why Fall Prevention Matters

A fall may seem minor, but it can lead to serious complications such as:

  • Broken bones (especially hips and wrists)

  • Head injuries

  • Reduced mobility

  • Loss of independence

Even the fear of falling can cause people to limit activity, which can lead to muscle weakness and increase fall risk over time.

Common Causes of Falls

Understanding what increases your risk is the first step in prevention.

1. Medications

Certain medications—or combinations of medications—can cause:

  • Dizziness

  • Drowsiness

  • Drops in blood pressure

If you’re taking multiple medications, a review with your provider can help reduce risk.

2. Balance or Strength Issues

Muscle weakness, joint pain, or conditions like arthritis can make it harder to stay steady on your feet.

3. Vision Changes

Poor vision can make it difficult to see hazards like steps, cords, or uneven surfaces.

4. Home Hazards

Many falls happen due to simple environmental factors like:

  • Loose rugs

  • Cluttered walkways

  • Poor lighting

  • Slippery bathroom floors

Simple Ways to Prevent Falls at Home

Small changes can make a big difference.

Improve Lighting

  • Add brighter bulbs in frequently used areas

  • Use nightlights in hallways and bathrooms

Remove Tripping Hazards

  • Secure or remove loose rugs

  • Keep floors and walkways clear of clutter

  • Tuck away cords and wires

Make Your Bathroom Safer

  • Install grab bars near toilets and in the shower

  • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub or shower

Wear Proper Footwear

  • Choose shoes with good support and non-slip soles

  • Avoid walking in socks on smooth floors

Stay Strong and Steady

Physical activity plays a huge role in fall prevention.

Consider:

  • Light strength training

  • Balance exercises

  • Walking regularly

Even small amounts of movement can improve stability and confidence.
